Nanoships are short, sweet moments with no attachments and no expectations of a follow-up.

To make it brief, the rise of 'nanoships': A new form of modern dating. Nanoship celebrates the power of ephemeral connections.

Nanoship keeps these moments small in a way that makes them delightful, and gives us home.

Dating today is the never-ending software update - just when you think you have your game down, it changes. In the old days, love was penned in handwritten letters and flowery confessions. Now? It all comes back to the lazy “wyd.”

Relationships, situationships, textationships - these days, we have more labels than a supermarket aisle to fill in the dreaded “what are we?” question. And in a time when the glossary of modern love seemed thoroughly established, there’s a new buzzword revolutionizing the lexicon: nanoships.

Yep, Nanoships are the new thing in romance, which is always changing.

Yes, Nanoships are officially the new thing in the rapidly evolving world of romance.

This report also published the findings of a survey of 8,000 singles and actively dating people aged 18-34 (2,000 each from UK, USA, Canada, and Australia) carried out between 3–18 March 2024. This research discovered that no romantic relationship would be too insignificant to make a difference.

Those micro-moments, from serious to fun, are leading to real possibilities, through nanoships, singles are finding meaning in every little interaction.

What is it?

Imagine this: You’re at a club or a wedding, and you meet someone and, whoops, there it is — that golden, stolen moment of glances and shy smiles. It’s a moment, a fleeting little snapshot, an adorable little bubble of connection that exists only for that moment. And that’s all it is, no strings attached, no follow-ups. This little bit of fluff is, in fact, a perfect example of a nanoship: small puffs of love that light up your day and leave you smiling.

From that spontaneous connection with someone you lock eyes with on the subway that you’ve so cleverly named an “eyecontactship” to the person who always messages you “good morning” or “share you Reels on th Nanoships is really about having fun with small interactions.

Imagine a "situationships", if you will, but for a short time and short-lived date or a one night stand, in a way. Nanoships frequently serving the purposes of instantaneous gratification in high contention.

It’s kind of a connection that could exist over a quick coffee, a fleeting moment at a party, or just a fun chat on a dating app, one that ends as quickly as it begin. It shows the rapid-fire nature of modern dating, in which some dates are savored for what they are, no cosmos-aligning expectations that they might develop into something more serious.

A lot of singles are really finding joy in these fleeting moments, says Shahzeen Shivdasani, a Mumbai-based relationship expert and author.

“These little moments shine because when searching for love, dating and settling down, there are moments you’re lonelier than ever.” Those are your solid moments, the moments where you learn who you are, and that understanding keeps evolving and changing,” she says.

What’s the big deal about nanoships right now?

And if relationships or situationships aren’t for you right now, for whatever reason, experts also agree that nanoships can be the one right thing (other than heavy of top of body things, possibly) for you.

It is, Shahzeen explains, human to experience loneliness in a moment and to yearn for connection. If you think that's startling, data reveals that one in every five people in the complete world is forlorn.

“These brief encounters provide single people with a glimmer of hope. They bring a little pep in your step, some excitement, and the reminder that something good could be just around the corner. That sense of possibility and new opportunities is what makes these small moments so joyful — they’re hopeful, and that hope is enough to keep us going,” concludes Shahzeen.

What are some of the other 2025 predicted trends?

Tinder’s study has also forecast other dating trends for 2025, in addition to nanoships. Have a look at some.

Whether you’re a “Man in Finance” or “Gamer Girlfriend,” according to the study, singles are now shirking the vague and getting vocal and particular about their needs and desires, with confidence and without apology.

Kiss-met

Kiss-met is a pun on “kismet,” meaning destiny or fate. This so-called planned-but-unplanned appears to be the vibe for 2025. Most of this connections are taking place online, and the real magic lies in the unscripted college moments - behold: the Kiss-met.

The study reveals a willingness by singles this year to drop rigid dating “rules” and pursue more genuine connections.

Casual hike dates (a must for almost 40% of survey participants) as well as pottery classes (34% are ready to get creative) and vintage shopping dates are on the rise as a result.

“The 2025 trend is about … raw, unrefined moments that make dating feel genuine and capture the meaning behind it,” the study reveals.
